January wet weather has been a constant theme in 2023. Fields are sodden, burns have turned into fast-flowing rivers and hillside tracks have transformed into new waterways. The long range forecast for the month remains unsettled with wet and windy weather being the main feature. welly boots are the go-to country footwear.
Wet weather footwear
When you have animals to feed the weather is always on your mind. We all have the old jackets, hats, gloves, and boots to hand by the backdoor. Outdoor clothing that’s up to the job is important. None more so than good wellies. A good pair of welly boots are the go-to country footwear. With the amount of rain we are experiencing maybe everyone should have a pair! At the beginning of 2021, we were introduced to Gateway1 boots. The boots have had two years of regular use and they have never let us down. My boots are the first things I’ll slip my feet into when heading outdoors. It doesn’t have to be raining or wintry, I have worn them all year round. They are unbeatable for comfort, warmth and grip.
Daily Deer feed in wet weather
I help out at the daily deer feed when work permits. We travel up to the higher ground to feed a herd of wild stags. The stags are given this additional feeding to help support them during the harsh winter months. Silage is supplied throughout the winter months so they can help themselves. Daily, they are fed on a high energy deer roll. I am often asked what is in them, the rolls are a combination of trace elements and vitamins from East Coast Viners. During the winter months, and after the rut, more stags can be seen. They tend to frequent the lower grounds of the estate as the weather is slightly less harsh than out on the open hill.
The January wet weather of 2023 hasn’t stopped the daily deer feed happening. Furthermore, fingers crossed there is no sudden cold spell. If the wet ground freezes over, ice skates will be required!
