The Stags are back. The red deer rut seems to be drawing to a close. The wild stormy weather has probably hastened the end of the roaring in the hills as the stags retreat and rest up. On Tuesday 17th October, there was a first sighting of a stag on the home beat. Today, an older stag was spotted with a closed-up left eye. This is a typical injury seen after the rut, no doubt damaged by an opponent’s antler. He appeared settled enough, and only time will tell if his eye will heal.
