Positive news for salmon

Positive news for salmon. Our salmon numbers have been in decline for decades. There are many factors responsible for their decline, from warming sea temperatures to disease. Additional challenges of barriers to spawning grounds impact on the salmon’s migration home. Spawning grounds are critical for the species. In late autumn adult salmon return to the rivers they were born. They swim back upstream to release their eggs. However, their annual migration, called the ‘Salmon Run’ can be blocked by man-made or natural dams, waterfalls and weirs. If they are unable to access their spawning grounds fish may die or abandon their egg laying.
