January is the first month

January is the first month of the year. It was established as the first month of the year by the Roman Calendar. The Anglo-Saxons called the first month of the year Wolf Monath. It was called this because it was the time in winter when wolves were seen in their villages searching for food. Remembering, earlier this month the first full moon was called the Wolf moon.

January is the first month and the light can be spectacular in the Scottish hills.

First month of the year

For some, January is a month of birthdays, celebrations and mixed weather. The weather brings a mix of light, temperature, rain and snow. So far, in Highland Perthshire we have much rain, and very little frost and snow. Perhaps the best known birthday celebration in January is on 25th January. The popular Scottish Poet Robert or ‘Rabbie’ Burns was born in 1759 in Ayrshire. His verse and songs are known worldwide. On Burns night, 25th January, it is tradition to celebrate with a feast of haggis, neeps and tatties. The meal is usually accompanied by dram or two of whisky, Scottish music and recital of the Scottish Bard’s work. However, the old favourite Burns song Auld Lang Syne is usually sung at New Year Celebrations.
